Description: Clove essential oil is obtained from the leaves of the clove tree (Eugenia caryophyllus) through the steam distillation process. The yield of essential oil from the plant material is approximately 6%.

Specific Characteristics: Clove essential oil is a colorless to yellow liquid that strongly refracts light. Over time and upon contact with metallic objects, clove essential oil darkens. It has a characteristic spicy-sweet aroma. The essential oil easily dissolves in alcohol (1:2 with 70% ethanol), vegetable oils, and other essential oils. It is almost insoluble in water. The main component, with a concentration of up to 95%, is eugenol.

Applications: The components of clove essential oil also have medicinal characteristics. In natural medicine, clove essential oil is considered a home remedy for oral infections, toothaches, and bad breath. This is why it is often found in mouthwashes. Positive effects of clove essential oil on gastrointestinal issues are also described. Most people find the sweet but spicy scent of clove essential oil pleasant. On the other hand, insects are repelled by its smell. Clove essential oil is said to bring relief to insect bites due to its slightly disinfectant action. This property also gives clove essential oil an advantage for use as a good base in creams and ointments for skin inflammation, acne, and minor skin injuries. In some cases, clove essential oil is said to have fungicidal properties, and thanks to its antiseptic action, it is often used as an ingredient in soap production.

In aromatherapy, clove essential oil is considered stimulating, helping to eliminate fatigue and lethargy and creating space for concentration.
